NAFO Applauds USDA for Its Commitment to Improving Carbon Data Quality and Accessibility

NAFO commends USDA for its $300 million investment to improve the accuracy and credibility of carbon data. Transparent, high-integrity forest and wood products carbon data, together with robust analysis reflecting the best available science, is critical to demonstrate the carbon benefits of sustainable forest management and wood products across the supply chain, validate and improving climate mitigation outcomes, strengthen rural economies, and produce climate benefits at scale.

Private working forests and wood products are critical to the U.S. strategy of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Because our private working forests are managed to sustainability standards that are among the highest in the world, demand for the climate benefits they provide is growing. The continuation of such growth depends on standardized, transparent, and accessible data to credibly determine and verify carbon benefits along the entire supply chain, starting with the forest.

Partnership between USDA, private working forest owners, and other partners is critical to the success of this historic investment. Ground-breaking efforts are already underway to modernize the collection, analysis, reporting, and use of forest carbon data. We look forward to ongoing investments to continue this important work.
